Yoga Classes

Our yoga classes are designed to optimize overall health and well-being by facilitating healing, reducing stress and bringing balance to the mind and body.

Our teaching style at Lotus In The Pines is an expression of a lineage going back to Krishnamacharya through B.K.S. Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, T.K.V. Desikachar, Godfrey Devereux and ultimately our teachers, Matthew and Holly Krepps of Circle Yoga Shala.  Our teachers, Sean Johnson, Wild Lotus Yoga Studio in New Orleans, and Mitchel Bleier, Yoga in the House, Yoga Teacher’s Lab, add Bhakti elements to our practice and teaching style also.

At Lotus in the Pines yoga systematically deals with all levels of your being, leading you to a place of deep stillness and silence.  From within this stillness and silence, you can more fully experience spirituality in the context of your own religion and person beliefs or the absence thereof.

In our approach we teach or apply all eight limbs or aspects of the classical or Hatha Yoga system. While our main focus is on asana or posture practice we devote time during class to breath work (Pranayama), meditation (Dharana and Dhyana) and the other ethical precepts of yoga including the Yamas and Nyamas. This connects us and our students to a body of knowledge that had its beginnings in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali some two thousand years ago. This text along with the Bhagavad Gita form the philosophical foundation for what has become our modern-day yoga practice.

These are a few suggested readings:  T.K.V Desikachar's Heart of Yoga, Mukunda Stiles interpretation of  the Yoga  Sutras of Patanjali, Stephen Mitchell's translation of the Bhagavad Gita, Deborah Adele's The Yamas and Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice, Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, Yoga, The Spirit and Practice of Moving Into Stillness by Erich Schiffmann and Hatha Yoga by Godfrey Devereux.

We emphasize safety, intense personal inquiry and release of tension and struggle in the pursuit of stability and comfort in the expression of asana. Our classes are appropriate for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

Group and private yoga classes are available.  Go to the yoga class schedule to find the class times for the group classes.  Private classes may be scheduled by calling Scotti or Richard at 318-472-9484.
